TOPIC 1 wk 5
b) Para 9 Are there ‘new kinds of journalist’ online? If so, how so?
The 'new kinds of journalist' found online are more likely to be the very people in our Media classes. They are opinionated individuals with a passion for journalism and media. This 'new journalism' gives Indymedia a kind of news that appeals to the public on a more informal level. Many of the news found on such sites will use less journalese, possibly be less academic and provide more of an insight into the issue. However, it may also be heavily biased from the authors perspective, not entirely correct or may possibly source fake or insignificant information. That is why research and opinion must be taken when reading such articles - even more than the biased newspapers we buy in the shops.

Aside from the bias, do you think these 'new' journalists differ from the more traditional ones?
I think it depends alot on their backgrounds. New web journalists are less likely to have boosted or academic backgrounds such as the newspaper journalists have. Especially in the case of the larger newspapers, many journalists have money thrown their way in order to aquire such jobs, so it could be said new journalists may have more talent and passion in their articles. With the weight of the newspapers expectations off your back, I believe web journalists to write more entertaining, honest and passionate articles. Then again, I despire newspapers and spun articles, so I'm bound to be biased.
I agree that they can have more passion because of their situations, but at the same time I think that less effort might be put in because they do not seem to have the stresses that it is guaranteed millions of people will be reading your article so it's got to be perfect. Where online journalists, though they do have a lot of people viewing they’re work, I personally don’t think it's a much as what the journalists writing for newspapers will have.
I agree that people who write online will have more passion, as their article is more likely to be an insight rather than actual news. Online journalism, i think, is mostly just opinions on news.
'New kinds of journalist online' are writers, but instead of writing for a newspaper or magazine thier work gets published on the internet, where as Tori said, not as many people will read it.
Do you think these people though are just as significant bringing us news as journalists are who write in the newspapers?
I think in a way they're more significant. Newspaper journalists are bound to write what the newspapers ask them to write, whereas there is much more freedom of information in web journalism. There is also more likely to be more passionate writers, as these people aren't getting paid! I'd definately take reading a web news article over a newspaper article.
Excellent discussion! I suspect we are programmed to believe that the more "process" the news is, the more accurate. If it's not beneficial to be "on the spot" why do the BBC send foreign correspondents out. It's actually not that new that the news would be written by someone in the midst of the action. Very old newspapers will evidence this through their reports from the Boer War etc. The important thing here is about ownership of the information that goes out. It's no longer the domain of the large corporations.
